Led by London-based dance artist Gaby Agis, this workshop is part of Knitting Fog
Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a pioneering approach to dance, movement and creative process that has evolved from the simple principle that when we are releasing physical tension, we can move with greater freedom, power and articulation. It is a playful and generous approach to dancing. Classes will consist of poetic imagery, supported by music and some partner graphics, using guided touch. There will be an opportunity for writing, drawing and reflection. Those new to SRT and those returning are welcome. Suitable for adults.
Supported by Groundwork Collective and held at Hwb Y Gors.

Jess Lerner and Amy Voris are delighted to co-deliver this two-day workshop which brings together experiential anatomy with site-responsive movement work. Both days will begin with an indoor experiential anatomy session (led by Amy at Jess’ studio) followed by an outdoor session (led by Jess on the Mynydd Du/Black Mountain). The morning sessions will sensitize participants to the structure and substance of their bodies in preparation for the conditions of the outdoor work. In the afternoons, Jess will provide participants with movement scores that she has been developing in relation to the mountain over a number of years. Both days will end with reflective/processing time in Jess’ studio.
Jess Lerner has been living in Brynaman since 2002, inspired by the vast common land of the Bannau Brycheiniog and hearty community of its former mining village where she has been teaching movement and yoga and also ran a village shop over many years. Jess’s practice integrates working with objects and the environment with movement. Her training and perspective is in both dance and visual art disciplines and is also a yoga teacher and movement facilitator.
Amy Voris is a dance-maker and facilitator based in Manchester, UK. Her practice is process-oriented and collaborative, driven by the desire to develop enduring relationships with people, places and movement material. She has completed training in Integrative Bodywork and Movement Therapy with Linda Hartley which informs her approach to dance-making and facilitating.
Jess and Amy share an interest in somatic movement and performance. Through this workshop, they are excited to explore how their approaches might intersect.

Invitation to an open rehearsal/work-in-progress showing of a movement piece with dancers Amy Voris, Gaby Agis and Jess Lerner.
Friday September 9th at 2pm at Herbert's Quarry, Mynydd Du/The Black Mountain, near Brynaman. Contact number will be given on registering with jesslerner66@gmail.com. this is a free event.
With an opportunity to join in with an improv afterwards, all disciplines welcome, i.e. movement, drawing, writing, sound, photography or even meditation.
We are working on a movement piece on a the ancient sea bed that forms a plateau high up on Y Mynydd Du, the Black Mountain near to Brynaman and Llangadog. A trio of seasoned women performers offer a historical, environmental journey and experience through movement. They use movement as a sculptural material which acknowledges their identity and sense of embodied imagination as mature women.
Through their simultaneous mapping of their interior landscape in connection with the exterior space, in the performance the dancers conjure up emotive scenarios and play out surreal connections. Responding to what is present in the moment; they draw out imaginative landscapes which are grounded in the details of the body.
It is fantastic to have Gaby visiting from London and Amy from Manchester.
Herbert’s Quarry is part of the Fforest Fawr UNESCO Global Geopark and a SSSI. This special place has stunning panoramic views, abandoned quarry pits and imagination.
This was made possible through funding for a dance Lawn project called New Ground/Tir Newydd of Oriel Plas Glyn y Weddw. Thanks to Nia Roberts and Simon Whitehead for their work on that project.

Gaby Agis will offer the first 3 classes from the Introductory Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) pedagogy. Spontaneous movement evoked by guided poetic imagery, supported by music and sound, will enable a creative and easily accessible exploration of technical movement principles such as multi-directional alignment, suppleness, suspension, economy and autonomy.
Gaby is a choreographer, teacher and dancer living in London, UK. She has been making performances for the past 35 years – nationally and internationally – collaborating with artists from a wide range of fields: from architecture to opera to sculpture to film; she has also created many site-specific works. Gaby has taught the Skinner Releasing Technique throughout the UK, USA and Europe for the past 25 years. This technique has been intrinsic to her creative practice.
Jessica Lerner will offer 2 sessions, working outside on the Mynydd Du (Black Mountain) and in her studio in Brynamman. Jess will hold space for combining visual art and dance, working with drawing, site and improvisation.
Jess is a visual and movement artist, and yoga teacher. Originally from London, she has been living in Carmarthenshire, Wales since 2002, where she now has a movement studio. Her workshops focus on natural choreography, the body and self. She is influenced by her drawing practice and somatic movement. She teaches improvisation where movement is in conversation with objects. Jess has led workshops from her studio and going out onto the mountain which is a short walk. She is keen on basing her work locally.
The workshop residency will take place:
Inside at the Aelwyd Hall - A large hall space with sprung floor, plenty of room for participants and leaders to work together.
Inside at the Studio of Jessica Lerner - A smaller studio with sprung floor, useful for feedback sessions, sharing and observing and more intimate work.
Outside on the Black Mountain - Local to Brynamman, particularly Herbert’s Quarry a landmark of industrial heritage and part of the Mynydd Du SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), and the Black Mountain and Mynydd Myddfai Registered Landscape of Outstanding Historic Interest.
